Hwy 1 Work Continues

Two major projects on Hwy 1 north of SLO County continue, but nighttime road closures are not planned for the immediate future.
The half-mile long, Cow Cliffs Viaduct Project, which is near Lucia from the Big Creek Bridge to south of Dolan Creek Bridge and some 18 miles south of Big Sur, will be placing forms for the new bridge’s diaphragms and deck this week.
Expect 10-minute delays with flagmen controlling traffic. Also, there’s a temporary traffic light that’s been installed for constant traffic controls. Work schedules subject to change with the weather. Contractor for the $3.9 million job is RGW Const., of Livermore, Calif. Completion is slated for sometime this fall, 2016.
Another job, the Elephant Trunk Project, which is building a massive retaining wall to shore up a slide-prone section of roadway, straddles the SLO-Monterey County Line. The job will continue with daytime work only, no further overnight closures are planned for now, according to Caltrans.
Expect traffic delays up to 10 minutes and there is a temporary traffic signal here too. Contractor for the $9.5 million job is John Madonna Const., of SLO. Completion is expected sometime next winter, 2016-17, again depending on the weather.
