Jury Duty Scam Warning

Scam-alertA phone scam targeting people who dodge jury duty is making the rounds in SLO County and the Sheriff’s Department is warning people that it isn’t making the calls and demanding money.
Spokesman Tony Cipolla said several people have called them to report being contacted by someone “claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office. They were warned there was a warrant out for their arrest because they failed to appear for jury duty. The caller indicates the resident can clear the warrant by making arrangements to give them a pre-paid debit card.”
At least two people have fallen for the con. Cipolla said on Feb. 14 a county resident reported a $1,650 loss and on the 18th, another resident reported a $1,600 loss.
“We want to warn residents these calls have no connection to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office,” Cipolla said. “The Sheriff’s Office reminds you that it is not our practice to contact residents by phone regarding these matters. Anyone who receives a call like this should report it to their local law enforcement agency.”
He is also asking people to give their friends and relatives a heads-up on the scam, in case they get a call.
Should someone shirk jury duty, they are most likely to have a bench warrant issued by a judge and Sheriff’s deputies will arrive at their door to serve it. Such warrants are not telegraphed before being served.
