New Airport Terminal Opens Nov. 1-2

The new terminal building at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is almost finished and the Airport has announced it’s projected take-off date.

The Airport announced that it plans to open the new terminal on Nov. 2 for departing passengers after some 2 years of construction on the multi-million dollar project.

The new terminal is 56,000 square feet — nearly 45,000 s.f. larger than the old one.

“High ceilings, natural materials and a new outdoor courtyard,” reads a news release, “convey a strong feeling of the regional landscape in the terminal space. The size of the new facility also provides travelers with a variety of new amenities, from a larger checkpoint area to a food and beverage concession post-security.”

The new terminal opens as the Airport has added two new major routes — to Denver and Seattle — within the past several months. “Larger planes serving existing routes have also put space at a premium. The new facility complements the airport’s route growth by providing a larger area for checkpoint queuing, new jet bridges and much more space after security.”

Kevin Bumen, director of airports said, “This is a very exciting time for the airport and its passengers. The new terminal is a beautiful, efficient building that will enable us to provide an incredible customer experience. People are going to love it.”

County Supervisors approved the new terminal project in August 2015 with a $39.5 million estimated cost.

“Construction of the new terminal has proceeded on schedule and budget,” according to the news release. Money for the project was culled from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants, a “passenger facility charge” that’s added onto tickets, and other airport revenues.
