The Center for Biological Diversity filed an appeal against the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission’s recent approval of oil company, Freeport-McMoRan’s, plan to drill dozens of new oil wells in the Arroyo Grande Oil Field in Price Canyon east of Pismo Beach.

The appeal was filed with the County Board of Supervisors, claims “Freeport’s request for an extension on an expired, decade-old plan to drill 31 new wells could threaten underground water supplies.” The Center estimates that there are at least 100 water-supply wells within a mile of the oilfield.

“County supervisors shouldn’t bend the rules to give this oil company permission for dangerous drilling,” said Maya Golden-Krasner, a Center attorney. The 31 wells are part of a larger Freeport expansion project with hopes to drill up to 450 new wells.

Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and the U.S. Forest Service recently signed a 5-year agreement to include the university’s Swanton Pacific Ranch near Santa Cruz, Calif., in the Federal Experimental Forests and Ranges Program. The Forest Service’s system of experimental forests and ranges provides places specifically designated and administered to enable the research necessary for developing improved methods of forest management.

“This is a mutually beneficial agreement that creates the potential for exciting collaborative research with the Forest Service and other experimental forests, and with other nearby universities,” said Swanton Pacific Ranch Director, Brian Dietterick, a researcher in hydrology and watershed management and professor in Cal Poly’s Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department.


 

Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is now accepting scholarship applications for college-bound high schoolers, as well as current college and continuing students.

“The awards from the company’s employee resource groups will mean that at least 150 students in PG&E’s Northern and Central California service area will receive from $1,000 to $6,000 next year for exemplary scholastic achievement and community leadership,” a spokesman said.

PG&E’s 10 employee resource groups each hold fundraisers to fund the scholarships intended to help offset the cost of higher education. To be considered, all applications must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2016. There are 10 categories for scholarships: Access Network for people with disabilities, Asian, black, Latino, legacy (for tenured employees), NuEnergy (new employees), Pride Network (LGBT employees) Samahan (Filipinos), veterans, and women’s network.


 

Mindbody, a locally based software company serving the wellness services industry, recently opened an onsite childcare center for its employees at its San Luis Obispo headquarters. The Little Ensos Center, operated by the CCLC, will provide educational support and care for up to 60 infants and toddlers.

CCLC partners with employers to provide high-quality on-site and near-site child care and education programs, caring for more than 11,000 children at more than 90 centers around the country, the company explained in its announcement. The new center is located at Mindbody’s campus on Tank Farm Road in SLO. The company also provides tuition subsidies for qualifying families to assist its employees with the cost of childcare at Little Ensos.
