New ‘Pirates’ Film An Over-the-Top Mess

Speaking of beaches, the Pirates are back again, with Johnny Depp and his friends swashbuckling over the Caribbean. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is the fifth installment of the pirate’s franchise. It is a fun movie, with great actors and amazing special effects, but it is really time for this franchise to be put to bed.

I loved seeing Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly back, as well as Geoffrey Rush and the other pirates we have come to love. Javier Bardem is amazing as the villain and Bardem’s character (Capt. Salazar) was creepy and the real show piece of this movie. Such a good villain. From his performance to the character’s design, his floaty hair never ceased to impress me. It all worked, he is definitely the part of this movie that you’ll remember.

The Plot: Capt. Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea, including him.

Capt. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas. Two young treasure hunters join Jack and we find that they are deeply tied to the previous characters and plots.

Jack Sparrow is one of my favorite characters in cinema. He is so clever although he looks stupid. In this movie he turned into a cartoon character. He just kind-of goes with the flow and never does anything clever.

He is supposed to look like a drunken failure although he is brilliant, in this movie, he is just a drunk failure. I did love the cameo of Sir Paul McCartney though.

Perhaps it’s the fact that a theme park ride can’t sustain a story for an entire film franchise? Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve seen this story before in four other films?

Perhaps it was the lack of character development and me not giving a damn about any of the new characters, or maybe it’s just because it’s an orgy of CGI madness? Who knows? Either way, this film is a complete over-the-top mess. Watchable? Yes. Enjoyable? Kind of.
