New Website for Coastal Trail Hikes

Pacific Gas & Electric has launched a new website to make reservations to hike a pair of coastal trails on PG&E property around Diablo Canyon. The website, see: www.pge.com/trails includes information about the Point Buchon Trail (from the Montana de Oro State park side) and the Pecho Coast Trail (from the Avila Beach side), and how to reserve a spot for a docent led hike.

The Point Buchon Trail, is a 3.4-mile loop that goes from Coon Creek to the Lion Rock Overlook just north of Diablo Canyon Power Plant, generally following the coastline. The trail is open Thursdays-Mondays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the spring and summer, and 4 p.m. during winter. Hikers must sign in but do not need to have advanced reservations or be accompanied by docents.

The Pecho Coast Trail is accessed through Avila Beach and parking at the Port San Luis Harbor parking lot at the base of the Harford Pier. Choose from two guided hikes, the 3.75-mile round-trip hike to Point San Luis Lighthouse and an 8-mile round-trip hike to Rattlesnake Canyon.

At the lighthouse, an admission fee of $5 per adult is required to take a tour of the head-keeper’s quarters. No charge for children under 12. Most of the site and the various buildings can be toured at no charge.

The fee supports the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers who restored, maintain, and operate visitor services on site.

The trail to Rattlesnake Canyon starts at the Port San Luis trailhead and goes north along the coast to a secluded, oak woodland in Rattlesnake Canyon. The trail is open to 20 hikers on Mondays and by special request. Docent-led hikes start at 9 a.m. and return about 3 p.m.
