Paso Man Arrested After Speed-Limit Chase

A Paso Robles man was arrested for various traffic violations, as well as probation violations following a long-distance speed-limit chase up and down Hwy 101 in North County.

According to Sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Perry, at 7:03 p.m. Monday, April 10, deputies tried to pull over a vehicle on Northbound Hwy 101 at Del Rio Road in Atascadero, for an “equipment violation.”

“The vehicle failed to yield to red lights and siren and a vehicle pursuit was initiated,” said Sgt. Perry. “After approximately 2 minutes, Sheriff’s deputies discontinued pursuit and the suspect vehicle information was relayed to the California Highway Patrol.”

The vehicle continued north at “legal freeway speed” and deputies followed the car to San Miguel, “where all law enforcement apprehension efforts ceased as the vehicle continued N/B on Hwy 101 towards Monterey County,” Sgt. Perry said.

Past San Miguel, a Monterey County CHP out of King City, picked up the suspect vehicle and tried to pull it over too, but: “A failure to yield again occurred,” Sgt. Perry said, “and CHP initiated a separate pursuit of the same vehicle.”

The car eventually turned around and started back Southbound on Hwy 101, no doubt recalling that he shook the cops before at the County Line. Templeton CHP units picked the car up again this side of San Miguel, and followed it onto Hwy 46 East in Paso Robles.

“CHP deployed a spike strip at Hwy 46 East near Geneseo Road,” Sgt. Perry said, “disabling all four suspect vehicle tires at 7:58 p.m. and resulting in pursuit termination at Hwy 46E and Whitley Gardens Drive.”

The driver, James Roy Bigrigg, 40 of Paso Robles, was arrested after it was discovered he had a no-bail felony warrant, which explains his reluctance to stop. Bigrigg was also booked on suspicion of failure to yield (a misdemeanor), driving on a driver’s license suspended for DUI, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 44-year-old female passenger from San Miguel was identified and released from the scene without charges, Sgt. Perry said.

The CHP completed its own investigation of Bigriggs’ alleged violations and is slated to file separate charges for suspicion of “failure to yield to their agency’s authority to stop.”
