Pre-Holiday Food Fun

After five years of supporting home grown and locally made food, the volunteer and financial group Slow Money SLO has developed into a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Established in 2012 as a group of locals interested in following the “Slow Money Principles,” established by the book, Slow Money, Investing as if Food, Farms and Fertility Mattered.

Originally rallying to save the SLO Natural Foods Co-op and move them into the current location off Broad Street, the larger Slow Money SLO mission is now to, “support the sustainable growth of small food enterprises through coaching, awareness, connections and funding.”

To celebrate ties with at least 18 businesses they’ve helped through the years – three peer to peer loans made this year – the organization is doing something a little different for their quarterly meeting at the SLO Guild Hall on November 14.

“It’s an opportunity to find out about some lesser known culinary offerings in the community before the holidays get here,” said Jeff Wade, Slow Money SLO’s executive director.

From 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Guild Hall (formerly the Grange) local restaurants and vendors Bliss Café, Back Porch Bakery, SLO Natural Foods Co-op,  Whalebird Kombucha, Mint + Craft, Lincoln Deli, Doc Burnstein’s and Niner Estates
will be offering up samples and explaining a little about their unique products.

Of the businesses Mint + Craft at 848 Monterey St. is the newest addition to town serving deli fare with gifts and crafts inside. And, said Wade, the Co-op decided to take part as well having recently upgraded facilities in the store with an eye towards serving the day to day needs of the neighborhood and local workers for food on the go.

As well as the usual presentations and updates from the group that accompany regular meetings, the public might also be enticed by door prizes and chances to hear about holiday plans from the restaurants.

“Part of what we do is to help keep people aware of local food,” Wade said. “Restaurants are a little different for us, not the type of business we always think about, but they’re a big part of sustainable local food.”

The Slow Money SLO Fall Gathering is Tuesday,  Nov. 14 at  6 p.m. at the SLO Guild Hall, 2880 Broad St.
