Quails Abound

Chi-ca-go!  Wait, Chicago? The California Quail was designated the California State bird in 1931, but many of us are hearing their very distinct call ‘chi-ca-go’ whether you live in a rural or urban area.

This is the time of year the California Quails are tending to their young. They are usually found in groups sometimes three or four adults watching over the young, ranging from 10 to 14 babies. The slightest movement or disturbance will have the adults sound a warning and the baby birds will go for cover and the adults will flee. The babies stay totally silent and do not move until the adult gives an all-clear call. Although quails can fly, they will usually run from danger and only fly if the threat is too close by.
