Kidical Mass, that family friendly, summer, cycling event that runs once a month through SLO’s bike friendlier avenues, had a tinge of patriotism just ahead of this national holiday.
Children of all ages ride side-by-side with their families during the events, “learning important bicycle safety skills in a fun, festive way” from the folks over at the SLO County Bicycle Coalition.
Held annually since 2012, the rides have become one of the organization’s largest and most popular outreach events.
Each ride has a different theme and both kids and parents are encouraged to dress up in costume and decorate their bikes too.
July 2 marked the first time that the seasonal, “Stars and Stripes,” motif was tried out but through the years many whimsical concepts have had a turn.
Not surprisingly “Superheroes” is an annual favorite with variations on the costumes making appearances throughout the summer.
The official mission of the rides is to, “Educate families to ride smart, and increase the visibility of families on bicycles. Provide a safe space for kids and families to learn how to ride together at a mellow pace. And, teach kids the basic rules of the road.”
