SLO Wellness Stretches into Los Osos

The SLO Wellness Center (SWC) opened a satellite office in Los Osos. Located on the third floor of the Optometric Care Associates building on 2231 Bayview Heights Dr., Sandy Sachs, SWC owner and chiropractor, asked if he could utilize the building’s upstairs storage space for his practice.

The center has already created additional rooms in the upstairs offices and is currently working to finish an acupuncture room that will be completed soon. With its green accent walls and natural lighting, Sachs wanted to project a sense of peace and relaxation. The walls are adorned by landscape photos by David Lalush, a local photographer, that showcase the beauty of the Central Coast. Sachs is also installing a massage chair that patrons can use while they wait.

“When they walk in here they are visually stimulated,” said Sachs. “We have aroma therapy going. We have candles going and music is always playing, so all the senses are kind of heightened, when they come in and get that treatment.”

The Baywood location will be open on Thursdays from 3:30–6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. Sachs wants to assure his other clients that his hours at the SLO center have not changed. Currently, Sachs operates the new location by himself, though patients may see his 12-year-old daughter, Alana, assisting with the office duties.

“She’s really excited,” said Sachs,” she checks them in and checks them out.”

The San Luis Obispo location has grown to include five doctors and offers acupuncture treatment. Sachs will run the satellite facility by himself in and is looking forward to reconnecting Los Osos community.

“It started as a back to my roots, so to speak,” said Sachs. “I started about 15 years ago with one patient and just myself doing everything. I’m super excited. This is my community. This is where I raised my kids. It feels right to be here.”

Sachs sees a lot of athletes and business professionals in his chiropractic and physical rehabilitation practice and hopes to expand on the people he can help.

A lot of people think that chiropractic is all about the spine,” said Sachs, “I see a lot of runners and I adjust their ankles and their knees.”

Sachs was first introduced to chiropractic treatment when he sustained an injury during a transcontinental triathlon. The event was designed to raise health awareness. Sachs participated with five people who were physically challenged. He was on a tandem bike with a blind and deaf woman when they took a spill. Always interested in the medical field, Sachs decided to pursue a chiropractic practice after the beneficial results he experienced from the adjustment to his neck.

With the successfulness of the SLO practice Sachs confident that the new location will prosper, though he is aware of the difficulties of owning a business the Central Coast can have.

“It’s really easy to start a business here,” said Sachs, “but it is really hard to maintain a business here.”

With the town’s location off the beaten path, Sachs believes that Los Osos needs to have additional health services to help sustain the growth.
