Town Hall Set for Feb. 16 On Rental Inspection Program

San Luis Obispo City Council is turning its attention to a controversial Rental Housing Inspection Program, when it hosts a town hall meeting set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 at the SLO Vet’s Hall, 801 Grand Ave.

The meeting “is designed to encourage the public to offer ideas the City can use to possibly modify the program or pursue a different approach,” reads a news release from the City.

Enacted in May 2015, the inspection program was in response to concerns about the safety and condition of SLO’s rental housing, which makes up some 45-percent of the town’s single family homes.

Under the program, properties are to be inspected every three years “to ensure that they conform to basic health and safety standards.”

Since being implemented, less than 2-years ago, residents and property owners have expressed concerns over tenant privacy and the potential to increase rents, further limiting the options for people seeking rental housing. The program is estimated to apply to some 4,000 homes.

Last September, the City Council agreed to re-evaluate the program and the new Council — voted in at November’s election — is moving forward with that re-evaluation, first seeking to get residents’ input and ideas for improving the program. Thursday’s town hall meeting is a first step in that effort.
