Women of Distinction Nominations Sought Now

By Neil Farrell
Nominations for the 38th Annual Women of Distinction Awards, sponsored by Cuesta College and the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo County’s Women’s Legacy Fund, are being taken now and the date for the awards luncheon is set for Thursday, March 19.
The awards celebrate Women’s History Month (March) and “recognize the contributions women have made in the areas of volunteering in the community, their profession and in philanthropy,” reads a news release from Cuesta.

The award categories are: Community and Public Service Award — Professional; Community and Public Service Award — Volunteer; Progress for Women Award; and the Grace N. Mitchell Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards luncheon is from 4-6 p.m. March 19 at Cuesta’s banquet room, Rm. 5401 (next to the cafeteria).
“The Cuesta College Foundation is pleased to once again partner with the Women’s Legacy Fund on these awards recognizing the achievements of women in our county,” said Shannon Hill, executive director of Cuesta College Foundation/Advancement.
“We are really excited to again collaborate with Cuesta College,” said Mary Verdin, president of Verdin Marketing and chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Planning Committee. “There are so many women in our community who work hard behind the scenes helping others, they should be recognized.”
The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31. For more information and for nomination forms, see: www.cfsloco.org.
The history of Women of Distinction goes back nearly to the mid-1970s when Cuesta College held a Women’s Conference — a one-day event to promote women as leaders and look back at their influences in history.
The event evolved to include an award in 1987 and in 1990, the program expanded to include the four awards that exist today.
