Cal Poly placed first overall at the University of Arizona-Tucson during the recent American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) regional competition. The event was held way back between April 2 and 5 but the school recently took some time to recognize their team after they got home.
The Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Team and Steel Bridge Team,  placed first in their respective categories, Cal Poly among 18 university teams from Southern California, Southern Nevada, Hawaii and Arizona.
“Our bridge this year is incredibly complex, and we’re thrilled with the results,” Shayla Allen, a senior captain of the Cal Poly Steel Bridge Team explained while at the Conference. “Now we’re pouring all our energy into preparing for nationals.”
Steel Bridge Team members include senior captains Eric Babin, Jeremy Gold, Demi Pacifuentes, and Angel Trejo . Junior captains are Elizabeth Coffey, Drew Glover, and Tyler van Iderstein.
The Steel Bridge Team also competed at the ASCE National Student Steel Bridge Competition on May 22-23 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Results from that contest were still pending as of press time.
Concrete Canoe Team project manager Jessica Leyva  credited a new hull design this year, and of course the ingenuity of the team itself, for Cal Poly’s sweep of all eight concrete canoe races. “A new rail design and stained murals on the interior and exterior of the canoe added aesthetic appeal,” she said.
The Concrete Canoe Team also includes mix-design captains Joshua Core, Julie Hendrick  and Brandon McCormick and construction captains Brett Diener, Tim Forrest, and Dayna Scott.
We haven’t seen their last competition though, they’ll be in the Concrete Canoe National Competition at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C, on June 20 through 22.
