America to Visit Morro Bay

Yacht AmericaA replica of one of the iconic sailing vessels in world yachting history is coming to the Morro Bay Yacht Club for a public visit, dockside tours and even a sailing trip.

The schooner “America” will be in port for a 1-day visit on Friday, July 17 as part of the America’s Cup Tour and guests of the Yacht Club. America is slated to arrive in Morro Bay about 6 p.m. on the 16th, which should be quite a sight coming into the harbor. She will be docked at the Yacht Club.

On Friday, readers can tour the sailing ship from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. $5 for adults, and free for children under-13. They will board passengers for a sail in Estero Bay at 1:30 p.m. Tickets for the sail are $75 for adults, and $55 for children 12-under. Purchase tickets for the sail online at: www.zerve.com/NxtLevelSail/ACTourG. America will depart Morro Bay at 7:30 p.m.

The 139-foot yacht is a painstaking replica of the original “America,” which in 1851 stunned the world by winning the legendary sailing race around the Isle of Wight in England and won the trophy that now bears her name, the America’s Cup. Back then the trophy was called the 100 Guinea Cup.

She is 139 feet long, weighs 226,000 pounds, has a 105-foot main mast with 5,000 square feet of sail and has a 76-person capacity.
