Celebrate SLO’s Open Space

Lovers of San Luis Obispo’s trails and open space can celebrate improvements made, when the City holds a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 6 at the Terrace Hill trailhead on Bishop Street.

The event will celebrate the City’s continued efforts to implement its Open Space Maintenance Plan and protections of natural areas surrounding the city.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at 3 p.m. at the Bishop Street trailhead, will celebrate the addition of new kiosks at multiple trailheads throughout the City.

“After the City’s Open Space Team officially recognizes the new kiosk at Bishop Street,” Lindsey Stephenson of the City’s Parks and Recreation Department said in a press statement,  “a leisurely stroll, or Ranger ride, will take place toward the top of Terrace Hill, where another new kiosk will await.”

The new kiosks have educational information about local natural resources, historical information and reminders about proper use of open space.

“In a 2015 survey, completed by over 400 respondents,” Stephenson said, “many open space users indicated that they would like to see improved trailhead signs and way-finding opportunities. All trailheads now offer maps of each open space on display.”

The kiosk design was created by (III) DESIGN. Historic and local photography was used to keep the signs authentic to the area, Stephenson said.

The City now has an trail network of over 52 miles, Stephenson said. “The four major open space properties in San Luis Obispo — Johnson Ranch Open Space, Bishop Peak Natural Reserve, Cerro San Luis Obispo Natural Reserve and the Irish Hills Natural Reserve — and get some 300-500 users per day, with up to 1,000 a day on holiday weekends.
