Meeting Set on Cal Fire Headquarters Project

Cal Fire SLO is embarking on a project to completely replace its headquarters in San Luis Obispo and the first meeting on environmental impacts is tonight.

Called the “Cal Fire SLO Regional United Headquarters Replacement Project” and located at 635 North Santa Rosa St., in SLO the State is holding a “scoping meeting” for the project, which will kick off the environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act or CEQA. AS a State project the California Department of General Services — Real Estate Service Division is overseeing the EIR preparation, which will be the basis for a permit application that must be processed through SLO County Planning Department.

The meeting is set for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 at the SLO Vet’s Hall, 801 Grand Ave. That public comments will be taken into consideration with the preparation of the EIR.

The project will demolish approximately 22,800 square feet of existing buildings and associated facilities, “to allow for the construction of new site improvements consisting of a new Administration Building, barracks/apparatus building, physical training building, auto shop building, generator building and Emergency Command Center,” reads a legal notice for the scoping meeting. Four existing buildings will remain in place.

The plan will widen the driveway from 30-40 feet and extending the entrance 50 feet before it turns and goes an additional 250 feet all the way to back end of the property. The entrance off Hwy 1 will need some work too.

SLO County contracts with Cal Fire, the State’s fire department, to manage and operate the County Fire Department, plus municipal departments like Los Osos and Pismo Beach, sharing personnel, equipment and facilities. Cal Fire/County Fire also dispatches much of the fire department related, 9-1-1 calls, including Los Osos, Cayucos and Morro Bay on the North Coast.
