Poly Polo Teams Win Regionals; Head to Nationals

Cal Poly’s Men’s and Women’s Polo Teams are riding high after winning a regional title and turning their sights towards the national finals.
Both Cal Poly Polo Teams won the 2017 Western Intercollegiate Regionals and qualified to compete in the National Intercollegiate Championships, the school announced last week. Both teams will travel to the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club to compete in nationals April 3-9.
“These two teams are clearly the strongest in the region and are ranked fourth in the nation,” said Coach Megan Judge.
Jillian Tietje, dairy science major, and animal science major, Trista Noland, were named All-Stars from the women’s team. Biomedical engineering major, Theo Anastos, and environmental management major, Sayge Ellington, were named All-Stars from the men’s team. And biomed major, Leah Torres, was given The Sportsmanship Award.


The teams include seven women and five men, representing a variety of majors from throughout the university. Other team members include master’s education student, Hannah Heitzig, animal science major, Miriam Flock, environmental management major, Bridget Hobscheid, biomed major, Maggie Papka, agriculture business major, Stone Rush, computer engineering major, Jeremy Kerfs, and agriculture business major, Connor Kanen.
The women’s team dominated the regionals beating Montana State 16-2 on arch 11 and trouncing Washington State 21-2 in the finals. The men’s team trampled Oregon State 22-2 on March 10 in the semifinals and corralled Montana State 20-2 in the finals.
