Undead for a Cause

The Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center on March 11 held its second, “Zombie Invasion SLO,” something Board President, Debra Balke, hopes will become an annual tradition.
The zombie-themed fun-run raised money for the Center’s services, had skipped in 2016 due to staffing and other concerns, but they got a little help with manpower this year from Cal Poly’s Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the California Conservation Corps, who “killed it” as zombies.
Members of the CCC got the chance to scare the bejesus out of runners with some dedicated imitation of the undead, while still staying close to home. The event was held at Camp San Luis, which is used for a variety of exercises, behind the main camp and nearby Cuesta College.
Organizers estimated between 300 and 400 attendees signed up for three runs throughout the day. Approximately a third paid a little extra to face their fears, go through make up and become members of the zombie horde. See: zombieinvasionslo.com for more information.
The Autism Center will hold another fundraiser walk in SLO’s Mission Plaza on May 7 for the living, as no undead need attend.
